As I listened to my grandsons Eli and Silas sing this song they made up for their new brother (with their Dad’s help)- “Lucius, Lucius, welcome to the world!” – to some tune that was a cross between “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and the Baby Shark ditty (can’t get that earworm out of my head after seven weeks of playing doula for my daughter) – I couldn’t help thinking how transition to the world REALLY feels to a newborn.

I usually simulate this in my breastfeeding class just so parents can get an idea about how and why a newly born infant might behave the way they do in the first few hours of life.

AHHH. . .life is good here in my jacuzzi. . .although it IS getting a little crowded in here. . .harder to stretch out!!  What’s with this increase in hugs? Oh well, it’s happened before.  No big deal.  Sure wish I had a little more room in here. . . .

WAIT a minute.  These hugs are getting harder. . .and closer together. . .something strange is going on. AND the voices are sounding more excited!

WHOA! What’s all this pressure on my head? OWWW! And my protector is breathing all weird and making noises I’ve never heard before! And I hear a whole bunch of other strange noises! Wha- what’s happening to meee-

SPLASH!! WOW! What ride down the water chute! I’m so COLD! And everything is SO BRIGHT! And LOUD!  WOW!

Oh, she’s so beautiful! And she smells so... .so SAFE! And DELICIOUS!! And what’s with all these other people making loud and busy! OVERLOAD, OVERLOAD. . .I’m just going to focus on this nice, warm, good smelling, somewhat familiar protector. . .I’m a little hyped, maybe a little scared. . .oh, but she smells so familiar. . .I just want to eat her up!

Wow! This is cool.  And that other familiar, deeper voice. . .he’s hanging really close. . he must be part of the protector unit! We’re all connected!  He’s making me feel safe and talking to me too!
But. . .suddenly. . .I’m feeling. . . .so. . .so. . .tired. . .can’t . . .keep. . .my. . .eyes open. Need to suck some more of this deliciousness. . .but . . .I . . .just. . .can’t. . . . . .hmmmm
